What is collagen?

Collagen is a fibrous protein insoluble in water, forming the basis of connective tissues, including ligaments, cartilages and bones. It accounts for 25 - 30% of all proteins in mammals’ bodies, 70% of skin, or also 10% of our total weight. Such figures are truly remarkable, yet understandable, as ligaments are parts of most our organs.

The word collagen originates from Greek kolla, which means glue, and the glue was made by prolonged boiling of animal tendons.

Collagen influences the look of our skin, quality of our hair, nails and teeth. Also, it permits our painless movement by maintaining our joints and ligaments in a healthy condition.

However, with increasing age, our body tends to lose its ability to produce collagen on its own. The symptoms of lacking collagen include aging skin, impaired quality of hair, cracking and brittle nails, aching joints and shooting pain in the back. Ligaments lose elasticity and it feels as if we were drying out.

Healthy rational diet lacks collagen!

There are only two ways to acquire collagen. First, it is its natural formation in our body, which, however, is reduced to a minimum over time. The other option is to acquire collagen from food.
